Charity Run at Southampton Airport

Summer Solstice Charity Run For Sophies Appeal

More than 300 people took place in the Summer Solstice Sprint Charity event at Southampton Airport today.

The 5km fun run began at 6am with families, local businesses and running groups all being involved to raise more than £3,500 for 'Sophies Appeal' - a local charity providing support for children with cancer and their families and carers.

Participants had the rare experience of running on Southampton Airports runway with many dressing up for the occasion.

The event was open to persons over the age of 12 and offered prizes for various categories.

Winners for each category:

Fastest Junior:  Sophie Jones (aged 12)
Fastest Female: Karen Andrews
Fastest Male: Pete Sansom

Darren Phillips won the Best Dressed Individual award.

The aim of 'Sophies Appeal' is to support the social, emotional and educational welfare of children, their families, nursing and support staff and provide a caring and supporting environment in both local hospitals and in the community.

There are so many ways in which the Trust can provide support to parents, carers and schools who find themselves suddenly faced with the reality of cancer.
